This 1968 Indian Scout is one of the approximately 50 manufactured by Sammy Pierce in 1968/69. This bike is #684230, which translates to 1968, 42-Cubic Inch, #30 produced. The 741 engine was stroked with a Sport Scout flywheel and special pistons to create the 42 ci displacement.
This engine was installed in an Indian Vertical Twin plunger frame (from a Warrior TT), and a 741 fork fitted on the front, with a set of Flanders handlebars to top it off.
The chassis and running gear are as it left Sammy Pierce’s shop in 1968. The engine has a fresh top end, with new custom pistons, and new valves. The bike has been completely re-wired with vintage looking modern cloth covered wire.
When this bike left Sammy’s shop, it had alloy front and rear fenders, a Kawasaki oil tank, and a 1957 era Enfield Indian tank on it. It also had 741 front and rear hub and brake assemblies, and the aforementioned Flanders bars.
At some point in its life (approximately 1987) all those items were replaced. Custom fenders and tanks that look like 1938 Indian Sport Scout pieces, replaced the bodywork from Sammy’s shop, and Sport Scout hubs and brakes and rims were installed front and rear. At that time Sport Scout handlebars were also installed. As these bars prohibited the bike from being operated safely, vintage Flanders bars have been located and installed on the bike.
Included with the sale of the motorcycle is a copy of the original order for the bike (hand written by Sammy), the original California Registration, correspondence from Sammy to the original owner during the build, as well as copies of photos of Sammy with this bike.
Special Historical note: Sammy Pierce, as a long time Indian Dealer, was able to purchase the naming rights to Indian Motorcycles and was provided a Federal Manufacturing number.
Painted black in 1986, with custom red pinstriping and a hand painted ‘Indian Head’ on the tanks. The paint is in good overall condition and shines up well for it’s age, but it is not perfect as it is 36 years old.
Custom fenders and tanks in the style of a 1938 Sport Scout. Circumstantial evidence says that the fenders were made by Jeff Johnson of Clovis, Ca. Tanks are custom made by him and look like Junior Scout.
The bike left Sammy’s shop with painted fork and wheels. The original owner had those chromed before showing the bike in 1968. The chrome is in reasonable shape for being over 50 years old, but is not perfect.
New pistons, Valves, Springs, guides, new Clutch, drive chain, new wiring, rebuilt carb with all new internals, new brake cables, ignition tune up with wires, rotor, points, and cap. Runs, rides and stops as it should.
