The Model 441 features Indian’s 77 cubic inch (1,265cc) inline four-cylinder engine utilizing the proven F-head (intake-over-exhaust) valve arrangement, delivering remarkable smoothness compared to contemporary V-twins. Owners and riders then—and now—appreciate the Four for its effortless cruising ability and refined power delivery, making it one of the most comfortable pre-war American motorcycles to ride.

Styling on the late Fours is unmistakable, highlighted by Indian’s signature deep valanced fenders, full skirted bodywork, and elegant proportions that epitomize the company’s pre-war design language. The 1940 redesign also introduced rear plunger suspension, significantly improving ride comfort over earlier rigid-frame models while maintaining classic pre-war appearance.

Mechanical features include:

  • 1,265cc air-cooled inline four-cylinder engine

  • F-head valve configuration (overhead intake / side exhaust)

  • 3-speed hand-shift transmission with foot clutch

  • Plunger rear suspension

  • Quarter leaf-spring front suspension

  • Drum brakes front and rear

  • Period Schebler carburetion

  • Approximately 30–40 horsepower, depending on configuration and tuning

Production numbers for the Four were always limited compared to Indian’s Chief and Scout twins, and with the cessation of civilian motorcycle production for wartime in 1942, the Indian Four would never return. As such, the 1940–1942 machines represent the final chapter of American inline four-cylinder production motorcycles, making them particularly desirable among serious collectors.

Today, the 1941 Model 441 stands as one of the most prestigious and collectible pre-war American motorcycles, prized for its engineering, smooth performance, and unmistakable presence. Whether displayed in a prominent collection or enjoyed on vintage tours, the Indian Four remains one of the most rewarding classic motorcycles to own.

A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most elegant American motorcycles ever produced—an enduring symbol of Indian’s engineering ambition and pre-war luxury motorcycling.
